Happy Friday! We would like to introduce you to our Friday Volunteer Team Lead Kevin!
When we asked Kevin to share about his experience and serving Joy, this is what he said:
I was introduced to Joys belong time volunteer Zoe when we were working on a CSA farm a few years ago. I remain motivated to show up because we are helping so many people access Nutrition food while reducing food in waste stream. And, I love the "family" I have made while serving the cause.
My favorite part about leading the team is the relationships I have developed with all of the other great volunteers, and Kathy. Since I retired, these folks have become a wonderful part of my social life experience.and they work extremely hard!
Coordinating the challenges can be tricky as every day is different and the volunteers present are all different people with unique personalities and communication styles. But all are welcome to do different tasks and be flexible with a fluid organization that can change on a daily basis. Communication is key.
Some other community organizations I volunteer with are Broken Shovels Farm animal sanctuary and the Gabriel Foundation Parrot Welfare Organization. Working with animals (like people) brings much joy to my heart.
One of my favorite parts of serving at Joys is working with our younger volunteers. They are so eager to help and take direction easily. Once upon a time I was a high school teacher and I enjoy interacting with younger people. It's also heart warming to watch them blossom in their interactions with adults and increased confidence in helping with tasks independently
For new volunteers it's very important to understand that every day of the week operates a little differently and be open to the different leaders directives. It's a fluid, ever changing organization that has a end goal of taking in food and distributing that food to 5000 families a month in our community. There are many ways to meet that goal so being open fluidity in the process is imperative to contentment at Joy's.
Joy's is unique in the amount of real work that gets done by a small, but amazing, group of employees and a whole lot of volunteers. Kathy's vision and love for her organization is unparalleled as it's been a 12 year evolution in serving all humans while doing great things for the environment. It's such a welcoming group to all volunteers and users of our services and that shows in our diversity through the organization.
I feel i bring positivity and Joy to Friday's team by genuinely caring deeply for my teammates. They all inspire me to be better. We communicate openly, are flexible, and help one another. I never ask of others to do things I don't want to do and I make lame attempts at humor which keeps people laughing!
We love you Kevin and your dedication to feed people and animals!
